Florals for spring? Groundbreaking…

My Spring look book

London never fails to remind us that Spring is not the same as Summer. You may see the sun, but don’t get so excited just yet - you might not need a scarf, but you still need a jacket. Every Spring, I think I’ve nailed the ultimate London girl wardrobe but the rain continues to come and the wind does not stop blowing. I am not someone who buys a set of clothes for each season - I am building what I like to call a flexible wardrobe that can be used throughout the year and the secret to it’s success is styling. This list are some aspects of my Spring wardrobe that has stood the test of time and allow me to leave the house with confidence.

The Canadians got it right

I am not embarrassed to say that I have been living in variations of a Canadian Suit for the past couple of weeks. It just works every single time. You probably already own a pair of wide leg jeans, so why not add a denim jacket to the mix and I can assure you that you will have endless outfits for the next couple of weeks. Just rotate a couple of tops, add jewelry/accessories such as a coloured belt and you will be warm and stylish - what more could you ask for?

If you want to mix it up, try it with different variations of denim. You can swap out your wide leg trousers for a skirt either pencil or midi. If you still want the look of trousers then you can try introducing jorts to your wardrobe - trust me, you won’t go back. I love my jorts because I can dress it up with kitten heels or keep it simple with loafers or some trusty converses.

You’ll have to work a bit more to sell the skinny jeans with a denim jacket but I have worn it with some knee high chunky boots and that look worked just fine for me.

Spice up the black with gold

I love a bold black look, but it doesn’t reflect my Spring mood all the time. Sometimes I want to wear black top to bottom but the bright sun and flowers in the trees seem like a heavy juxtaposition. One way I overcome this is through accessorizing. My go to? Gold. Gold and black are the it couple of every season and NEVER fail. Black in winter can give a bold look, but in Spring, you will need to invite it’s best friend to your look. When the sun shines, you will also shine as the rays reflect off of whatever metalic accessory you got on. Why not try adding a chunky gold arm cuff or statment earings?

I also recently started getting into colourful accessories too that are quite cutesy like butterfly clips and coloured scrunchies which can also breathe some fresh air into your Spring outfits.

Blue, no red, no, blue

This might just be more personally, but blue is the best colour of Spring/Summer. There I said it. If I had to live in just one colour during this season, it would easily be blue.

Don’t worry, my style tip is not to just stick to blue - it’s to find out what works for you. Everyone has a Spring colour, the same way everyone has an Autumn colour. In Spring, I’m more of a blue, green lilac kinda girl, while in Autumn, you can catch me in orange, emerald or black.

Find the colour that makes you pop. The sun is your spotlight so experiment with colours so you can shine. That way, even if you have to layer up, you can still feel all the Spring vibes. Maybe start with pastel colours like yellow, baby pink or blue etc, or maybe a cherry red is more you thing!

Florals for spring - groundbreaking

I don’t own many floral prints, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love them. Yes, it may be cliché, but when else are you going to wear a sundress with lilies printed on them?

Any type of naturey print you have, throw it on - but not together. I’m not a fan of clashing prints in one outfit.

Or, if you’re not a fan of prints, you can try adding flowers in your hair for that ethereal, I-can-speak-to-animals kind of look, but in the best way possible.

A cheeky cardi

We’ve all had that teacher who would spend half the lesson wrapping and rewrapping herself in her beloved cardigan. Well, that’s about to be you. Cardigans are so cute and convenient. You can throw it on over a little tank and jeans situation if it’s a bit chilly when you leave the house, then wrap it around your waist of shoulders as the temperature increases throughout the day.

Your Spring wardrobe has to be versatile and prepared for any situation. I’m talking fog in the morning and heatwave in the afternoon. The cardigan really is your best bet because it’s warm enough to keep you during windy moments, but also light enough to not be a heavyweight to carry later in the day.

But you have to get the right one. Three things to consider: 1) The neckline has to be flattering 2) The sleeve should be fitted, not tight 3) If you’re only getting one, make sure the colour matches the rest of your wardrobe to ensure maximum use out of it.

Midi to the max

There have been mornings these past few weeks where I look out the window and see the sun, but I look at the forecast and see wind. However, I really want to wear a skirt/dress and I don’t like tights in Spring (they just feel extra itchy). Midi to maxi hems really are the way to go.

You’re showing just enough skin to still look elegant to still look elegant while not catching an unnecessary cold. But what’s really great about this length is the layering opportunities. I’m not even talking about for fashion reasons, I mean to keep warm. If you see me wearing a midi skirt during grey weather, you can guarantee there will be a pair of 3/4 length leggings under there. Once again keeping the comfort along with the style. Or sometimes I’ll level out the midi skirt with my knee high chunky boots to play around with the silhouette of my outfit.

You’re hot when you’re cold

This is the season where almost everything goes. You can wear your favorite woolly jumper with your beach shorts and hiking boots. Just look at the guests at fashion week who go all out with their oxymoronic dressing. (Ooooh that sounds like a good blog title to do next).

Use this time to experiment. Even if you’re at work, you can try out a blazer with some tailored shorts for a formal look that won’t leave you setting during an unexpected heatwave.

One item of clothing that best suits the hot and cold weather is a classic waistcoat. This is probably my favorite thing to wear because I can wear it in any season. I can throw it on with a matching set, mix it up with different bottoms, or layer it over my tops and skirts. Its up to you if you want to wear it as a top or mini jacket.

Set of graphic tees

You can never go wrong with some graphic tees. Actually, on second thought - you can.

I have quite a few graphic tees and they provide great put together lazy girl looks. I love to match it with some flowy trousers and platform trainers then match that with little bits of jewelry for the put-together part of the lazy girl look.

There are different ways you can style the actual top too. You can go easy and just wear it as it is, or you can do a half tuck into your bottoms or a knot (depending on how oversized it is). I have two personal rules for graphic tees 1) When in doubt go oversized 2) Don’t just be buying any graphics and parading around in something you don’t understand.

There you have it. These are my general guidelines for keeping my Spring fashion as good as it can be! Don’t be shy to use some of these tips and make them your own. Style is personal, my rules are just suggestions. Make sure to subscribe to the newsletter for updates on new blog posts!
